How do I use my mala beads?

Mala beads are generally held in the left hand and used with gentleness and respect.
One bead is counted for each recitation of the mantra, starting with the first bead next to the “guru” bead. The guru bead is the 3 holed bead that is usually larger or more decorative.
The first bead is held between the forefinger and thumb, and with each count the thumb pulls another bead in place over the forefinger.
Recite one mantra; move your thumb and forefinger along to the next bead; recite the next mantra; then repeat.
After completing a full circuit of the mala, the practitioner flips the mala around 180 degrees (this takes some practice) and continues as before, in reverse order. One avoids passing over the “guru” bead, as doing so is symbolically like stepping over one’s teacher.

What length are your mala beads?

Most of our 108 mala beads have 8mm round beads and are 90cm long (this is the circumference length).
We do make some 108 malas with smaller 6mm beads, these are 70cm long.
Our black skull mala beads are an example of this, and available in 6mm or 8mm bead sizes.
The yak bone malas are the exception to this! They have oval beads so are shorter in length.
We make our wrist mala beads with 8mm and 10mm beads, they are available in 4 different sizes, please see the wrist mala size guide.
The knotted malas with 8mm beads have a circumference of approx 108cm, and with 6mm beads it is 90cm.

How do I care for my mala beads?

When not in use please store your mala beads in a mala bag or gift box.
To clean your mala: gently wipe the beads using a damp cloth and place in sunlight or moonlight to dry.
To clean the silver & gold beads please use a soft jewellery polishing cloth.
If you are wearing your wrist mala everyday please be gentle when taking your wrist mala on and off and periodically check the thread for wear.
