Buddhist Necklace, Mala Bead Necklace and Prayer Necklace
Tibetan Buddhist prayer beads, or mala beads, are used to count mantra recitations, for meditation, yoga, prayer & reflection.
We design & craft a selection of 108 malas with genuine semi-precious healing beads neatly finished with end beads or, if you prefer, we make a selection of tassel necklace finished with a hand made tassel.
Traditionally used for chanting mantra these long malas can be “worn” around the neck or wrapped around the wrist.
Why 108 Beads?
Our mala necklace have 108 beads; in Buddhism 108 is an auspicious number as there are said to be 108 impure thoughts or defilements (known as kleshas).
Also, after chanting 100 mantras 8 extra mantras are chanted to allow for any that were chanted when concentration lapsed. The guru bead (the larger 3 holed bead) is not counted.
Tibetan prayer beads often have counter beads at 27 bead intervals to aid the mantra counting process (this is why some of our mala necklaces have 111 beads … 108 beads + 3 counter beads = 111 beads)
The 3 end beads is our signature style mala, we were inspired to use these numbers symbolically from the Buddha’s teachings – the 3 Jewels & the 6 Perfections.
